HLI (established 1979) organises language courses for students to live and study in their teachers homes worldwide.
Local organisers recruit teaching families who can receive foreign students in their homes on a full board basis and give individual English lessons. The local organiser must see that the house or flat is clean and also check a copy of the teachers qualifications (a university degree or state teaching certificate is required and some teaching experience is helpful) but the only qualification needed by the local organiser is common sense and a friendly manner.
Once a dozen families have been found the only other duty is to decide which family is suitable for each individual student and to follow up with a phone call 2 or 3 days after the student has arrived to see that all is well.
The great advantage of this work is that the local organiser can choose exactly when they want to visit families and when to make phone calls, this work particularly suits retired people but it is also very easy to combine these activities with a full time job or with looking after a family at home
All expenses such as petrol, phone calls and advertisements are paid by Home Language International and a commission of £25 per week per student placed is also paid so that if a student stays for an average 3 weeks the reward to the local organiser is £75 for simply placing a student in a suitable family and being at hand in case of problems such as illness or accident.
